NEW JERSEY HOUSING FACTS - NJ Will Never be a Parking LotThere are 4.8 million acres in New Jersey More than 1.3 million acres are in the state’s network of preserved open space, wildlife management areas, and farmland. That’s more than 2,000 square miles. Nearly 300,000 acres have been preserved since 2000. Another 600,000 acres can’t be developed, including wetlands, beaches, water and other areas considered unsuitable for building. There are nearly 1.5 million acres officially considered unprotected & undeveloped - including land labeled as agricultural, forest, bare, exposed rock and transitional areas. Continued downzoning by municipal leaders and the extensive regulations placed on land use that has been passed since the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan’s adoption has decreased the amount of buildable land significantly. Large swatches of land are also preserved in the Pinelands (About 800,000 acres) and in the Highlands (About 400,000 acres.) Even if every remaining acre of buildable land were actually developed, New Jersey remains the Garden State. |
